Calculation
How is the weight of round steel calculated?
A round bar is a cylinder. The circular cross-section and the length give the volume; multiplied by the material density, that gives the weight.
Formula
m = π × (Ø ÷ 2)² × L × ρ
- Ø = diameter in mm
- L = length in mm
- ρ = density (steel: 7.85 kg/dm³)
- m = weight per bar — multiplied by the quantity it gives the total weight
Example: a Ø 20 mm round bar weighs about 2.47 kg per metre. For other materials the respective density is used.
